Explainable AI for Communications and Networking
Tuesday, 3 June 2025, 14:00 – 17:30, room 1.G
Speaker:
- Hatim Chergui (i2CAT Foundation, ES)
- Claudio Fiandrino (IMDEA Networks, ES)
- Farhad Rezazadeh (Hostelworld Group, PT)
Motivation and Context
This tutorial provides a deep dive into Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) and its pivotal role in promoting transparency and accountability within autonomous communication networks. Attendees will explore an array of XAI tools, metrics, and frameworks designed to clarify AI-driven processes in networking, supported by illustrative taxonomies, mathematical formulations, and practical examples. Key applications in wireless communications, network management, Neuro-symbolic XAI for communications and generative AI for telecom will be discussed. Finally, regulatory aspects such as the EU AI Act will be highlighted.
As communication networks increasingly rely on complex AI-driven automation, explainability is crucial for ensuring trust and compliance. This tutorial is closely aligned with the EUCNC 2025 themes, focusing on the interplay of AI and communication networks. By equipping participants with the means to interpret and validate AI models in network contexts, the tutorial supports the industry’s need for transparent AI frameworks that improve both performance and adherence to regulatory standards such as the EU AI Act.
