Motivation and Background
5G is more than an evolution of mobile broadband. In addition to meeting the ever-increasing requirements from traditional mobile communication services, it will be a key enabler of the Internet of Things (IoT) and mission-critical services. 5G will support the transformation of processes in all economic sectors, integrate a variety of vertical industries, and open the ecosystem for technical and business innovation. The technical innovation of 5G systems will not be limited to new radio interfaces but also include network softwarization and new business models. 5G will integrate different telecommunication technologies (e.g. mobile, fixed, satellite and optical), all with corresponding standardization organisations.
Standardization of 5G systems must thus address a wide range of issues. There is an inherent trade-off between the desire for a few standardized solutions to bring economy of scale, and the multitude of applications with highly diverse requirements. The workshop will address both technical topics targeting features expected to impact standardization, and policy topics addressing issues and concerns related to 5G standardization. This workshop brings together different stakeholders to discuss these aspects, and the target outcome is an up to date 5G-PPP standardization roadmap.
The workshop is organized under the theme standardization in the track “business aspects, vertical sectors, applications/ service”, but the technical topics may address all EuCNC tracks.
Structure
Tentative program
9.00 – 10.30 Welcome and Keynote speech addressing e.g., 5G standardization in 3GPP, 5G standardization in other body, standardization to address verticals’ needs, how to “standardize” multiple business models foreseen with verticals.
10.30 – 11.00 Coffee break
11.00 – 13.00 Technical session, 5—6 papers focusing on features that will have an impact in standards, why this is an important feature, and when it should be introduced.
13.00 – 14.00 Lunch
14.00 – 16.00 Policy session, 5—6 papers focusing on timelines and impacted standardization bodies.
16.00 – 16.30 Coffee break
16.30 – 17.45 Panel discussion on balance between a few standardized solutions to reap benefit of economy-of-scale and a multitude of use-cases and business models, or business model management in 5G.
17.45 – 18.00 Closing remarks.
