Research Challenges and Opportunities in 6G

Friday, 9 June 2023, 11:00-12:30, Congress Hall

Organizer

  • Eric Hardouin (Orange, FR)

Motivation and Background

6G research is now well on its way across the globe. In Europe, Hexa-X-II has started in January 2023 with the aim to bring 6G to a complete system concept ready to feed standardization from 2025. In addition, initial discussions on 6G requirements and capabilities have started in the ecosystem, e.g., in ITU-R in the framework of the IMT.Vision document, and in NGMN with the publication of the the NGMN 6G Requirements And Design Considerations. As the coming months and years should see the crystallization of both the vision of what 6G should deliver in terms of value and services, and its technological foundations, this panel will gather experts from different backgrounds and regions of the world to exchange perspectives on remaining research challenges and opportunities raised by 6G. In addition to measuring the level of alignment between different regions on 6G visions, it will also be the occasion to discuss how to foster global alignment towards a common 6G standard.

Questions

  1. Do we need a 6G? why?
  2. How do we maximise the chances to end up with one standard and not several?
  3. How do we guarantee trustworthiness in 6G?
  4. What else is critical for 6G to be a success? From technology perspective or any other dimension?

 Participants

  1. Chair: Eric Hardouin (Moderator) (Orange, FR)
  2. Mitch Tseng (Next G Alliance, US, TW)
  3. Amina Boubendir (Airbus, FR)
  4. Erik Dahlman (Ericsson, SE)

Eric Hardouin

Eric Hardouin leads the Orange research on Networks and Infrastructures, which investigates future access and core networks, infrastructures and their information systems, to provide ambient connectivity and distributed computing power that are cost effective, inclusive, sustainable and source of value for the society. Eric received his Ph.D. degree in signal processing and telecommunications from Telecom Bretagne and the University of Rennes 1, France, in 2004. Since 2004, he has been with Orange, where he conducted research on interference mitigation for mobile networks. Between 2008 and 2013 he represented Orange in the physical layer standardization group of 3GPP (RAN WG1) for HSPA, LTE and LTE-Advanced. From 2012 to 2015, Eric coordinated the research on wireless networks in Orange. From 2016 to 2022, Eric led the Orange research on future access and transport networks and technologies, as well as related business models. Eric had a leading role in the NGMN 5G White Paper, as co-lead of the work on 5G requirements. Eric is the author of the book “LTE et les réseaux 4G” (in French).

Mitch Tseng

Dr. Mitch Tseng is a Research Consultant of the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in Taiwan, and a Vice-Chair of the Applications WG of the Next G Alliance, focusing on enhancing the “Digital World Experience” through applications for 6G and beyond. He had been leading the development of various telecommunication standards in TIA, 3GPP2, 3GPP, and helped established oneM2M prior to joining the Industry IoT Consortium (IIC). His latest passion is to promote technologies such as Edge Computing, Digital Twin, AR/XR, Li-Fi, and AI, and roll them into IIoT and 6G Services. In addition to being a vocal leader in Next G Alliance, Mitch is Co-Chairing the Marketing and Innovation Working Group and the Testbed Council in IIC with passions on turning innovations into real businesses. He is also serving as the Rapporteur of ISO TC204 WG16 focusing on ITS Communication standard aspects.

Amina Boubendir

Amina Boubendir is currently Head of Research and Standardization Strategy at Airbus Defence and Space. She promotes research and technology to overcome secure communications challenges like reliability, sovereignty, and sustainability through development projects on 5G/6G networks, space and satellite communications, aerial connectivity platforms, military communications, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing. Sitting at major engineering and leadership boards, Amina sponsors the presence and contributions of Airbus at a number of European and global SDOs like, 3GPP, TMForum, ETSI, IETF/IRTF, and DIFI consortium. She represents Airbus at the European 6G Industry Association (6G-IA) and is a member of the advisory board of the European 6G Flagships Hexa-X I, Hexa-X II. Amina worked as a researcher and as Research Projects Technical Manager at Orange Labs in France from 2013 to late 2021. She was an expert member of the Orange experts’ community on networks of the future with expertise in the automation and software-oriented design and management of end-to-end networks and services. Amina has led a number of EU 5GPP and French collaborative research projects on the move towards network “servicification”, openness, programmability, and virtualization through NFV and open APIs, 5G network slicing, zero-touch network management, IoT and Edge infrastructures federation, as well as 6G networks where she has been co-leading the Orange 6G strategy. She was also the technical manager of MOUs with major telecom vendors and has driven B2B 5G innovation projects for verticals from the Energy, Automotive, Railway, and Healthcare industries. Amina holds a PhD in Networking and Computer Science and a Master Degree in Network Design and Management, both from Télécom Paris. She has co-authored 30+ publications and has received 5 Best Paper and Best Demo Awards. As a member of the IEEE Communications Society, Amina is actively involved in the network and service management community through conferences.
