Panel 1

Beyond 5G Technological Enablers for the Next Generation Mobile

Wednesday, 19 June 2019, 11:00-12:30, Auditorium 1
Organizer:
  • Afif Osseiran (Ericsson AB, Sweden)

Motivation and Background

5G networks in the framework of 3GPP activity have a clear roadmap towards technology validation, rollout and commercial launch along 2019. First mobile devices were presented in last mobile world congress events, and the machinery of industry is running at maximum speed to have them in the market in the second half of the year. However, new scientific opportunities are blooming in the field of networking research, radio technologies, new spectrum potential bands, mainly beyond 90 GHz, and improved computation capabilities. It includes interaction with photonic systems as well as new cooperation networking and protocols, notably in the mobility context.
This panel is one of the fist opportunities to bring together reputed experts from various sectors to present their views on the technology enablers for the next generation mobile. Industry, vendors, operators, academics and computation experts will exchange their forecasts while looking for the new application driving the innovation towards the 6G. This is the context for the panel at EuCNC 2019.

Questions

    1. Are there new deployment strategies for the future, is the era of macro-cells coming to an end?
    2. Which is the vision of vendors with respect to virtualization, are the players going to change?
    3. Which technologies have no room in 5G roadmap and require a new generation frame?
    4. Is there a clear killer application in mind for the 6G?
    5. Will be the industry the driver of the new generation? Which are they actual requirements?

 Participants

The panel is composed of (see CVs below):

  • Chair: Afif Osseiran (Moderator) (director of Industry Engagements and Research at Ericsson AB, Sweden)
  • Eric hardouin (Director of the “Ambient Connectivity” research domain of Orange Labs, France)
  • Thomas Magedanz (TU Berlin / Fraunhofer FOKUS, Germany)
  • Linus Thrybom (ABB, Sweden)
  • Suat Topsu (University of Paris Saclay-Founder & Chairman Oledcomm, France)

Afif Osseiran

Afif Osseiran [SM] is director of Industry Engagements and Research at the Ericsson headquarter in Stockholm. His main responsibility is to bridge insights, tactics and strategies between technology, research/standardization and industries such as manufacturing. He holds a doctorate degree from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden, and a master’s degree from École Polytechnique de Montreal. Since 1999 he held several positions at Ericsson in various units (such as product, research and strategy units). He co-authored the first comprehensive book on 5G with Cambridge and two books on IMT-Advanced with Wiley.

Eric Hardouin

Eric Hardouin is the director of the “Ambient Connectivity” research domain of Orange Labs, which investigates future access and transport networks and technologies, as well as related business models. Eric received his Ph.D. degree in signal processing and telecommunications from Telecom Bretagne and the University of Rennes 1, France, in 2004. Since 2004, he has been with Orange Labs, where he has conducted or supervised research on interference mitigation for mobile networks. Between 2008 and 2013 he represented Orange in the physical layer standardization group of 3GPP (RAN WG1) for HSPA, LTE and LTE-Advanced. From 2012 to 2015, Eric led the research on wireless networks in Orange Labs. Eric had a leading role in the NGMN 5G White Paper, as co-lead of the work on 5G requirements. Eric is the author of the book “LTE et les réseaux 4G” (in French).

Suat Topsu

Passionate about science since my childhood, I naturally turned to Research. After a doctoral thesis in the field of Physics, I got a position of Professor in Quantum Physics at the University of Paris-Saclay in 2008. During more than 15 years I studied, taught and lead Research in the field of quantum physics with the constant desire to understand all the secrets of the Nature. In 2005, aware of the need of connectivity that will be induced by the development the Internet of Things, I developed a technology named LiFi that allows people to be connected to Internet not with radio-waves but any artificial light spots.

To bring this disruptive technology in the market, I founded a company in 2012 named Oledcomm. Since 2018, I manage an investment funds with the aim of financing breakthrough technologies that will enable us to meet the 17 challenges of Europe’s Horizon 2030 Sustainability Program. Convinced that Science and Innovation must serve the well-being of Humanity and the conservation of the environment and not to darken our future, we created and invested on tens of deep technologies-based startups.
