THE DAUPHINOIS MUSEUM

No need to be a nun to enjoy popular local art in this convent ! Dominating the city from the Bastille’s slopes, the Dauphinois Museum is settled in the Sisters of the Visitation’s convent. It is more than everything dedicated to popular cultures and human beings of the Dauphiné Alps.

Certified as a historical monument, the convent has been built at the beginning of the 17th by Saint-Francois de Sales and Sainte-Jeanne de Chantal. Nevertheless, nothing was constant with its personal history. It used to be a religious home, it served as a prison, barracks.

In addition to the permanent exhibits like the People of the Alps dealing rural mountain life through the centuries, the Dauphinois Museum hosts a plethora of events connected to the « Dauphiné region », the Alps, the history of foreign communities in the area, and more. From the convent’s gardens (open to the public), you can enjoy a pleasant view of the city old neighborhood, the banks of the Isere river, and the surrounding mountains.

DOMAINE DE VIZILLE

Re-live one of the most historical events of French History: The French Revolution!

The Vizille Estate is first and foremost, a castle that had played a key role in history. Moreover, it has a landscaped park that has been classified as a “Remarkable Garden.” But, this is also the only museum dedicated to the French Revolution that brings together so many valuable works. Set foot in this historic and natural landscape.

Inside the park, you will be able to admire the tremendous ornamental lake which often served as a playground for swans, ducks, and even herons. Along the banks, you will discover the French-style gardens, and magnificent rose gardens.

An animal park is home to stags, deer, and roes roaming together more or less freely. With 100 hectares of protected natural landscapes, the gardens of the Vizille Estate bring together human history and wild nature. It is, for sure, the ideal place to play, stroll.

The Museum of the French Revolution is housed inside the Castle of Vizille, the formal home of the Dukes of Lesdiguières, the powerful Périer family, and presidents of the 3rd and 4th French Republics. It is in this prestigious setting that the work of arts and historical artifacts from the period of the Revolution and the 19th century are presented.
The Domaine de Vizille offers a program full of events and shows all year long: concerts, guided visits, shows, children’s workshops, and more. Your children are going to love the pony rides that are also possible at certain times of the year.

THE CABLE CAR

Get a bird’s eye view of Grenoble and the surrounding valley with a ride up in the cable car. Being inaugurated in 1934, « le téléphérique de la Bastille » was the first urban cable car, before being transformed into what local people call « The Bubbles » (1976). These round gondola lifts with their clear sides take you up to the Bastille fort: 500 meters up in just 5 minutes!

Here, you’ll discover the Geologist’s Terrace, which overlooks the Vercors and Chartreuse mountain ranges. The Vauban belvedere offers a stunning view of the Belledonne Mountains, with the Mount Blanc on the horizon.

With more than 260 000 visitors each year, the Bastille has been equipped with numerous activities: via ferrata, Acrobastille ropes course, the panoramic restaurant Téléphérique, the fine restaurant Chez le Per’Gras (since 1865), and the Mountain Troops Museum.

IN THE HEART OF THE CITY

Is that just a cliché considering the “Grenoblois” with sport shoes and fleece jackets? Of course it is, because this is more than a bustling sport city. Let yourself merge into the pedestrian streets tangling into the historical boroughs. The heart of the city is just waiting for visitors to conquer; recounting years of history from the building process of « Notre Dame Cathedral  » to the Building of Progress built in 19th.
Eyes in the air, feet on the cobblestones, let the city center unveil itself to you.

The heart of the city will make your heart skip a beat, as you enjoy terraces of « Place Saint André  », opposite the old Parliament building , or stroll along the fountains of « Place Grenette  ». The sun-speckle atmosphere of « Place Saint Claire »will warm your heart.

The inner of the city will refresh visitors as they stroll in the shadows of the old plane trees from centuries in the « Jardin de Ville  » Park, a few minutes from Stendhal’s birthplace. With its pastel façades, the « Jardin de Ville » has its own air of the Italian dolce vita.

The heart of the city can also be explored by bike, where you can meet friends on the banks of the Isère, along the Saint Laurent neighborhood.
Last but not least, the city also boasts museums that show off its history to all who want to know: The Grenoble Museum of Artthe Old Bishop’s Palace, and more.
Grenoble’s heart is yours for the taking-go ahead!
