Special Session 13

Special Session 132024-05-27T10:19:34+00:00

Digital twins as key framework paradigm for 6G

Tuesday, 4 June 2024, 11:00-13:00, Room Darwin Hall
Session Chair:
  • Volker Ziegler (Nokia Bell Labs, DE)

A number of emerging and innovative framework paradigms for the 6G platform deserve holistic and integrated consideration. Most prominent among these frameworks are digital twins; note that key frameworks are interrelated and include orchestration and exposure, QoS/QoE, analytics and data, AI/ML, security and privacy and sustainability across the device-cloud-network continuum. We will connect the physical world to the digital world to optimize our own human world, increase productivity and foster sustainability. All this is enabled by the massive scale deployment of sensors to create digital twin models with real-time synchronous updates and in conjunction with artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML). These digital twin models are crucial because they allow us to analyze what’s happening in the physical world, simulate possible outcomes, anticipate needs and then take productive actions back into the physical world. Digital twin models are already being used with 5G. With 6G, we can expect these frameworks to operate at a much larger scale. Digital twins will be found of universal applicability – including factories, integrated wide area and cloud networks, cities and even digital twins of humans.

Programme

The special session is structured in the following way:

Presentations of impulse

– DT2 : Digital transformation and the digital twin as 6G framework paradigm (15 minutes)
Presenter: Volker Ziegler (Nokia)
In this presentation, the session chair will present an overview of digital twinning and interrelated frameworks as associated with the 6G platform.  The presentation will discuss DT taxonomy as well as selected areas of DT research including digital twin evolution of communication networks and factories.

– 6G Digital Twinning for CSPs (15 minutes)
Presenter: Hanne-Stine Hallingby (Telenor)
This presentation will show the potential of DTs from Telenor perspective including aspects of innovation and ecosystem, CSP as user and provider of DTs and use case examples.

– 6G, AI and Digital Twins: Realizing new system efficiencies and going beyond communications (15 minutes)
Presenter: Amira Alloum (Qualcomm)
This presentation will give an overview of 6G chipset research and impact with special focus on enabling digital twinning and its requirements.

– 6G Digital Twinning for Industry (15 minutes)
Presenter: Andreas Müller (Bosch)
This presentation will provide a bird’s eye view on the current technical activities in 6G research for digital twinning in Industry including aspects of productivity increase, safety and sustainability.

– 6G Digital Twinning for Aerospace (15 minutes)
Presenter: Amina Boubendir (Airbus Defence and Space)
Digital simulation and design has been a key paradigm in the aerospace sector for many years. This presentation will provide an overview of 6G research enablers and digital twinning approaches for complex aerospace systems from the digital factory to a digitally-twinned system including aspects of enhanced connectivity, mission control, and reliability.

Panel:

Digital twin as pathway to the metaverses (45 minutes)
In this panel, we will focus on the main drivers and attributes of digital twins as broadly introduced in the previous presentations allowing for an open discussion with the audience.

Key Questions:

  • What are the key drivers and attributes of digital twins in the 6G era?
  • Are can DT framework help foster growth beyond cost/productivity impact ?
  • Will AI/ML be a critical enabler for DT framework paradigm?
  • Are there any prerequisites for 6G Day 1 from DT use case perspective?

Panelists:
Amira Alloum (Qualcomm); Amina Boubendir (Airbus Defence and Space); Hanne-Stine Hallingby (Telenor); Andreas Müller (Bosch); Chair: Volker Ziegler (Nokia)
