Motivation and Background:

ICT technologies are changing rapidly and the existing technologies are merging into new technologies providing value added to various applications in different industrial sectors. Today the trend is seen in the convergence of the 5As of Internet of Things: Anything, Anybody, Anywhere, Anytime, Any-path, processing with the 5Vs of Smart Big Data: Volume, Variety, Velocity, Value, Variability and the 5G mobile communication. This new convergence trend redefines the notions of real-time IoT, 5G mobile communications systems and Smart Big Data. IoT applications are combining real-time sensing, data delivery, big data intelligence, application of insights through real-time actuation, while IoT applications will make use of heterogeneous networks using different kinds of radio access nodes, which are placed according to the needs of the field. The future networks need to improve cellular coverage, capacity, the global throughput, use technologies that enables low latency, real-time bandwidth, and advanced packet priority management, achieving higher throughput and less jitter, while enhance the user experience. The emergence of industrial IoT connecting actuating robots, haptic computing through the inclusion of the next generation networking capabilities will accelerate the convergence and integration of mobile communications, Internet, and big data processing in realizing diverse applications of IoT.

The European Commission (EC) launched in Brussels during the Net Futures 2015 conference in March 2015 the Alliance for Internet of Things Innovation (AIOTI) to boost Europe’s potential in the Internet of Things field. The initiative cuts across several technological areas such as smart systems integration, cyber-physical systems, smart networks, and Big Data; and targets SME and IoT innovators to create an open IoT environment.

In this context, the objective of the panel is to address and discuss the challenges and opportunities within the future Internet of Things developments, 5G and wireless networks, and identify use cases where Big Data Analytics have a significant role in planning, implementing and operating the 5G networks and deploying Internet of Things applications across various industrial sectors.
