WORKSHOP 7

State-of-the-Art Research Results in Green and Energy Efficient Communications for the Telecommunication Networks of Tomorrow

  • Monday, 29 June, 09:00-12:30, Room 8

  • Organisers:

    • Thierry Klein (Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs, USA)
    • Dominique Chiaroni (Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs, France)

Workshop Description

The predicted capacity growth in data networks is driven by an accelerated traffic growth from bandwidth hungry applications and services, an explosion of devices and machines connected to the Internet of Everything and ever more distributed data centers and content distribution servers. This fundamental trend in communications, computing and storage networks creates a need to investigate new research directions to reduce the energy consumption of the future fully connected world and make energy efficiency a primary design goal for ICT networks of the future. The need to reduce the energy consumption of future networks is reinforced by rising energy costs, environmental and political considerations for greater energy autonomy and stability in energy supplies for the next decade.

The first part of the workshop will report on the results of the GreenTouch consortium where the final event will be held in New York in June 2015. This workshop will cover the major results and technologies from the GreenTouch portfolio and show the potential energy efficiency improvements. The second part of the workshop discusses open challenges and new research directions for further energy efficiency improvements, with a particular focus on optical and future data centre networks.

This workshop is an opportunity to bring together research experts, scientists and engineers from industry and academia sharing the state of the art in energy efficiency communication and networking research.
