Places to Visit in Oulu on Your Own

 

1. Science center Tietomaa

Finland's first science centre Tietomaa offers fun and excitement for visitors of all ages. The changing theme exhibitions consist of over 150 exhibits, and there is also a magnificent super screen theatre and a glass elevator with a view over Oulu. You can enjoy yourself exploring the interactive exhibitions of science centre all day!

2. Oulu city art museum

The Art Museum of Oulu is situated on the edge of the beautiful Ainola Park, within walking distance from the centre of town.The Art Museum's old red brick section, by the architect Birger Federley (1921), represents Industrial architecture of the early 1900's. The building has been part of a larger real estate of the leather factory "Veljekset Åström Oy". Oulu Museum of Art’s unique collection focuses on visual art from Oulu and Northern Ostrobothnia. The emphasis of the collection is on contemporary art.

 

3. Museum of Northern Ostrobothnia

This cultural history museum is located in the Ainola Park. The building was designed by architect Oiva Kallio and completed in 1931. The museum's primary focus is in the history and culture of the City of Oulu and the Northern Ostrobothnia region of Finland.

4. Turkansaari Open-air museum

The island of Turkansaari, situated on the Oulujoki river about 14 km east of Oulu, is an old trading center and place of salmon fishing. Turkansaari museum area includes a traditional farmyard complex complete with the all relevant buildings and equipment characteristic of the Northern Ostrobothnia region. Also on display are old forms of livelihood such as tar-making, salmon fishing, lumbering and log floating.

5. Market square

In the market square you will come across the Toripolliisi statue which is the symbol of the city. The market hall by the square was opened in 1901 and provides great service for those who appreciate good food and handicrafts. The old storehouses by the market square are an interesting piece of history in the city. The oldest storehouses date back to the 18th and 19th century. Nowadays, the buildings have restaurants, cafes and boutiques selling handicrafts.

6. Hupisaaret park

With its walking paths and white bridges, Hupisaaret is a charming green district that has been a popular picnic destination for centuries. Formed by a series of islands at the mouth of the Oulujoki river, Hupisaaret also includes the attractive Ainola Park.

 

7. Nallikari beach area

Nallikari offers different kinds of things to do, every day of the year. Nallikari's long, shallow beach attracts sun-worshippers but is also suitable for an active day on the beach. Located approximately three kilometres from the centre of Oulu, Nallikari is easy to reach. You can also ride your way to Nallikari. The bicycle route starts from Torinranta and runs through the beautiful Pikisaari neighbourhood.

Activities

Paddleboard (SUP), Kitesurf, Windsurf or Wake in Oulu

Oulu is a true gem for watersports like kitesurf, paddleboarding, windsurfing or wakeboard. If you look at the map the coast around Oulu is very diverse with bays, peninsulas and several islands. Combine this with shallow sandy beaches and you have just perfect location to do kitesurfing, stand up paddleboarding, windsurfing or wakeboarding.
